TIRED OLD

AT THE

MOVIES

Bette Davis and Mary Astor square off for the love of George Brent in Edmund Goulding’s classic The Great Lie (1941).

This is the tale of two women who despite their mutual hatred of each other, agree to strike up a bargain and create a “great lie” in order to save the life and reputation of someone they love. Davis and Astor bonded and re-wrote the script daily , with the result that Astor won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. It’s great fun, like watching a prize fight with two actresses at the top of their game and with able support from loyal Hattie McDaniel and icy Lucille Watson. You won’t want to miss it!  Steve Hayes
