Science or no science, a girl's got to get her hair done

TIRED OLD QUEEN AT THE MOVIES

John Agar and Mara Corday find themselves doing battle with a gigantic spider in Universal's sci-fi classic Tarantula (1955).

Sci-fi veteran Jack Arnold directs this with all the fast paced action, thrills and terrific special effects he brought to "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" and "It Came From Outer Space". For anyone with a touch of arachnophobia, this film will have you squirming in your seat. It's the perfect way to spend the evening as the days grow shorter and the creep crawlies come inside! Ah, Tarantula, a favourite of mine. Some of the effects are surprisingly good (like the initial back-projection in the laboratory). Not quite as classic as Them, but great fun, especially if you have (as I do) mild arachnaphobia.
