JUST

WHEN IT COMES to gay relationships, the question remains: from who do we take our cue?

There are those who doggedly follow the path of monogamy, and others who feel that we should define our own relationships (and who think monogamy is for breeders).

As Keo Woolford's character says in this short, Just, "I just don't think we should be constrained to a normative, heterosexist, monogamist, construct of a romantic relationship." Er, that sounds like something you read on a blog, bruv. And it doesn't help that you look like the dude who cut costs on the electrics in the Glass Tower, leading to one tiny spark that led to a night of blazing suspense. He could have saved time and just said, "Boys will be boys." Actually he probably doesn't look much like Richard Chamberlain. Maybe it's the YouTube effect. Or maybe it's because both characters are oily creeps.

Just was directed by David Maurice Gil. It stars Keo Woolford and Edward Gunawan (who was also on writing duties).

The thing with this short film is that the story could be just as valid with heterosexual characters, and I'm not sure if that "lack of gay specificity" is a quality or a default...

all that monogamy is for breeders crap is just from people who want to have everyone they want when they want them and not feel cheap or like a whore. You are what you are!! dont try to make monogamy the bad guy cause you wanna pass ur chico stick out to everyone in town!

Well that answered nothing but worse yet, it revealed nothing either. Er, other than that Edward Gunawan's tasty, tasty abs that is. I guess if you're going to make a short that brings nothing new to the table, you'd better have tasty abs on display. I think I'll watch it again on mute.

Ka-blammo! Everyone's a critic!

It was cute, but nothing earth-shattering.

But I disagree with Della's perception of people who decry monogamy. Yes, many are just over-sexed and wanna screw every pretty thing they see. But on the other hand, there are those who truly see monogamy as an unnatural constraint (which is why most heteros can't even get it right).

The character in the film was dishonest by not laying it out before sex. But the internet hook-up never asked, so he's at fault as well. And when you screw someone who's name you barely know, you get what you deserve, and forfeit the right to be self-righteous.

Bottomline: The film peeks at a situation without judging or trying to come up with a solution - because it hasn't been determined whether there is a problem or not, and even if had, there is no solution. Such is the sad question mark we call LIFE.

I LOVE this short film because it touched on both sides of the issue when it comes to relationships and what makes them work...I am a HUGE fan of monogamy, but that's because I am with someone that someone that naturally brings that out of me and I wish for every single one of us in the gay community to have the same...until then I see nothing wrong expressing that part of ourselves with another...
