This is the tale of two women who despite their mutual hatred of each other, agree to strike up a bargain and create a “great lie” in order to save the life and reputation of someone they love. Davis and Astor bonded and re-wrote the script daily , with the result that Astor won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. It’s great fun, like watching a prize fight with two actresses at the top of their game and with able support from loyal Hattie McDaniel and icy Lucille Watson.
