It is not only by dint of lying to others, but also of lying to ourselves, that we cease to notice that we are lying

Boyfriend

Indar Smith
Boyfriend, a new short film by Kyle Krieger, starring Indar Smith and Jake Wilson, explores an all too common dating scenario.

“I recently teamed up with a few of my best friends to create this short film for my application to film school," Krieger says. "This is my first attempt at directing a film and I really loved the process so much. I learned a lot about storytelling….When single, I have often encountered partners or friends or people who I was interested in who led me on and entertained my company without disclosing their honest intentions right away….A part of me understands why they would do that. I too have been in a relationship and was attracted at the newness and flirtation of a new acquaintance. Especially if my relationship was in a downturn or going through a rough patch. This film is just a glimpse into those emotions and that process.”

There are few who are worthy to understand what I feel. I seek out those who are of this chosen few, and I avoid the rest

I first heard Conqueror when Estelle sang it with Jussie Smollett on Empire, and thought no other version could measure up. But her solo rendition is equally powerful, and Jussie would surely appreciate the incredible dancer who features prominently in this stunning visual. Every frame is like a Mapplethorpe picture.

We do not think of the outcome which generally comes to pass and is also favourable: we do not succeed in changing things in accordance with our desires, but gradually our desires change

"The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there," wrote L. P. Hartley. On the basis of these (albeit tongue-in-cheek) 1995 interviews with Ray and Kule T (members of 2 Unlimited and MN8, respectively), I can only think "thank f**k for that".

It's hard to imagine any musician responding to the question "would you wear pastel pink?" with the sort of answers the "lads" give here. It's okay boys, no one thinks you're gay, and in a mere twenty years time, it'll be mandatory for hard men to wear pastel pink.

However, it's nice that Ray is "always cautious when he makes love", because he's afraid of dying of AIDS. Less nice is Kule T's confession that he's a dog kicker...

We believe that we can change the things around us in accordance with our desires - we believe it because otherwise we can see no favourable outcome

But, instead of what our imagination makes us suppose and which we worthless try to discover, life gives us something that we could hardly imagine
