Out R&B artist Darren Morilla has just dropped his debut single, the gorgeous and sensual Impossible. He says, “Impossible is (broadly) about putting your all into a relationship, but not knowing how the other person feels or knows what they want. As a gay man, I think one of the most important things for the ‘equality’ movement is visibility. The experiences and emotions I was experiencing were real when I was writing this song. I wanted people to know that I wrote this song when I was falling in love with another man, and show that what I experience as a gay man is no different to any other relationship. I wanted to stay true to myself and write about my experiences.” Get it.
AND TIME Courage isn't just a matter of not being frightened. It's being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway
"I want to hear them scream till I'm deaf with pleasure..." Doctor Who in 1985 was a show at the top of its game, and Vengeance on Varos, Phillip Martin's brilliant satire of the '80s "video nasty" market, is surely the season's most original entry. More than thirty years on, it's fascinating to note how episode one's cliffhanger (one of the show's best) anticipates the reality TV swamp we now find ourselves in. The accusations of Varos being "too violent" (particularly the Doctor himself, with the acid bath scene being JNT haters go-to example) are red herrings. It's no more so than in 1963 or 1976. The show would be this clever, and this good, again, finding its form in the 1988/9 seasons. But after 1985 it wouldn't be the confident, "big swinging dick" it was in this vivid, thrilling year of adventures. Still high on the twentieth anniversary, Doctor Who was a show that was bigger and better than ever before - until sneering public schoolboy Michael Grade decided he didn't like it. And so, because he could, he cancelled it. And of all the gifts Varos bequeathed us - Arak and Etta, Quillam, half-naked, beefcake bodyguards - the '80s best monster, Sil, is the most rewarding. Here he is.

Together, Raheem DeVaughn and Wes Felton are The Crossrhodes. "With the current state of political uncertainty, creatives have a responsibility to be the voice and reflection of the people. Music with a message is a much needed and welcomed disruption. Footprints On The Moon plans to inspire and incite positive and catalytic change," says Raheem Devaughn.
"We come from a rich legacy of black artists who created music to wake the consciousness of the masses. Music is supposed to inspire. We do not promote escapism or a fantasy. We have created reality music. Footprints On The Moon will expose racial and social injustices, economic disparities, and issues that affect real people. It is our hope that the people to support artists and movements that reflect the changes needed for our communities," says Wes Felton. Footprints On The Moon is out 22nd September.

Darkest Dream is the impressive debut EP from San Francisco's Saturn Rising. It "juxtaposes Saturn's oppressive Catholic background and liberating journey through go-go dancing in San Francisco clubs. Each track aggressively wrestles between both lived experiences, highlighting his difficult quest for love as a sexually guarded queer."

Here's Gon Blow, the latest from Cakes Da Killa's debut studio album, Hedonism. Cakes told Vibe: "For me, the track is all about movement, so we included some B-roll from a party Eric and I threw. Ben’s animations helped add some dance sequences to the video, because dance culture influences my music a lot, and I feel there is a disconnect between that and rap culture lately."

20-year-old Londoner Darnell Depradine's visual EP Dear Male Ego really is something special. "I feel toxic masculinity is almost like a cloak males have to wear to conform with society and be accepted," he says. "Wearing the cloak entails covering one's true self. It's the idea of constantly having to hide yourself in fear of being judged unfairly by society." Get it.

22-year-old Londoner MNEK samples Ultra Nate's '90s dance classic Free on his gorgeous new track Paradise. It is. Here's the stunning new video, which addresses police violence. Director Ciaran Lyons: "What grabbed me was the underlying idea of the different responses elicited by the chaos of the modern world. The desire to escape from the real world into a fantasy paradise vs. the possibility of standing strong and separate from all the madness and cruelty, in the hope of preserving something better."

Here's queer singer/songwriter Leland's insanely catchy paean to unrequited love, Mattress. He says: "This song wouldn’t exist if I wasn’t a gay artist that’s out and proud, and able to write about the feelings and emotions I’m going through. It’s sort of a sad lyric with a happy beat, and that’s really the tone I’m setting for my music." Get it.
