IMAGE IS EVERYTHING
BOYS - EVERYONE WANTS one, wants to be one, or wants one stuffed and mounted on the wall of the living room.
(I'm channelling Ron Burgundy).
Boys - they're the latest craze sweeping the nation. Screaming teenagers are left hyperventilating in their wake and housewives are besides themselves. Even professional sportsmen have been caught up in the frenzy of unbridled excitement.
"Not only are they practical, as objets d'art they are just delightful. You can simply have one in the drawing room, the bathroom or even in the den," Martha Stewart says. "They're just so versatile."
"They're hot," Paris Hilton believes.
Even President Obama is open to this remarkable cultural force: "The previous administration had it's own agenda, but I'm not here to talk about what's been before. I want to talk about the future. And I believe America is ready for boys." After rapturous applause, President Obama flashed a million dollar smile and concluded: "Boys? Yes, they can."
They've been spotted everywhere. Parks, Laundromats, shopping malls - even in automobiles. And Oprah Winfrey gave each and every member of her audience one on a recent episode of her eponymous talk show.
Not everyone is happy with the phenomena. Members of the Westboro Baptist Church, led by Fred Pehlps, having been protesting at those locations where boys gather in numbers with placards saying, "Y'all are going to hell. Boys = Fags."
"I don't know any boys personally," rapper 50 Cent claimed. And Sarah Palin has been leading hunts in Alaska. Former President Bush has also chipped in: "Look, put at its most simplest, these boys are out to commiserate the United States of the World. They're in every home - yours, mines, theirs. Ya'all probably looking at one right now. People say, how can I help on this war against boys? How can I fight evil? You can do so by mentoring a child; by going into a shut-in's house and say I love you."
A force for evil or a force for good? Perhaps it's too early to say, but one thing is certain: boys are here to stay.
