LENSED

IMAGE IS EVERYTHING

THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF Matthew Mitchell...

Now, something completely unrelated. On Sunday night I was loitering near Leicester Square, waiting for a ride. Just off to my left, outside Angus Steakhouse: the bus stop, crowded with people. To my right: Charing Cross Road, head up to Soho.

It was the four sexy boys making their way towards the bus stop from Soho that attracted my attention: one light-skinned - more camp than Noah and Alex put together - the other three almost imperceptibly gay, dark, probably second generation Nigerian. They were young, 17, 18 at the most. Two of them started play fighting. It was boisterous and loud. People scattered, stared, looked aghast: young black boys! Fighting! Someone's going to get stabbed! These bitches had obviously been in Soho. Were they were playing up to the assembled straights who'd mostly come from Leicester Square and its surrounds? They put on a hell of a show. After a few minutes of raucous ramping, one of the boys started screaming like a girl - "AAAAAAAAAhhhh! AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! You pulled out my stud!" The straights relaxed and turned away in disgust - just some faggots. The three dark-skinned boys got on the bus, and the über-camp light-skinned one minced back towards Soho.
